Hampstead Hive Member Spotlight - Tutor Squared
Tell us about your business..
Tutorsquared came about when the lovely Hampstead preparatory school we were teaching in was suddenly closed three days before the end of the summer term. Shell shocked and a little bruised we picked ourselves up and decided to see it as an opportunity to do something different. As experienced teachers we had witnessed the negative impact the 11+ exams can have on pupils and families. The British school system is complicated and daunting, the exam content is challenging and cramming past papers with a tutor can be damaging to a child’s self-belief.
We provide a more holistic approach. We believe a structured programme is required to teach the core concepts. Our classes are small and foster a positive learning environment where pupils’ confidence is nurtured. We develop a close relationship with our parents, providing progress reports and termly parent teacher meetings. We are always available to answer questions and give open and honest advice. Ultimately the child's mental health is of upmost importance to us. We passionately believe that happy children are successful children.
What is your greatest business achievment so far?
We began with a small group of 4 pupils last September and we are really proud to say that our Saturday classes are now fully booked in the afternoons with very few places remaining in the mornings. And we have already registered pupils for the new academic year beginning September 2023!
What do you want to achieve next?
Our next project is to launch intensive courses for the school holidays. The majority of the 11+ entrance exams take place within the first term of Year 6, so it makes sense to make the most of the long summer holidays with some targeted revision.
What one piece of advice would you like to offer someone thinking of entering into your field?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help! We have been so grateful to all the people who have given us advice and answered our many questions. It has been an incredibly steep learning curve moving from the safety of full time employment to setting up a new business but so far it has been a very rewarding and enjoyable experience.
What is your favourite aspect about working in the local area?
We are privileged to have been living and working in and around Hampstead for decades and it is great to feel part of the community. Teaching connects you to families and it is such fun to bump into familiar faces and catch up when shopping in the High Street.
What encouraged you to join Hampstead Hive and what has your experience within the Hivebeen like so far?
Hampstead Mums has always been a trusted go to for information about the local area. As we were building our business we were delighted to learn about the existence of the Hampstead Hive. During our first conversations with Jessica and Nitika we immediately knew that we wanted to be part of this special group. It is a positive community that celebrates, supports and promotes local businesses. All the members we have met so far have been incredibly welcoming and we feel lucky to be included.
