Hampstead Hive Member Spotlight - Maryanne & Sue
Tell us about your business, what services do you offer?
Tutor Your Child began in Lockdown as a way of helping parents and children with education. We realised parents wanted to help their children, and children wanted to learn, but did not know where to start. We wanted to create a simple, structured tutoring programme to help everyone but without private tutor costs, so we set about creating ‘Tutor Your Child’.
Tutor Your Child now offers different tutoring packages for maths and/or English for children in Reception through to year 6, depending on your child’s needs:
Curriculum Steps Programme – Weekly tutoring video, with supporting work at three levels, working through the curriculum step-by-step, including regular assessments to check progress and understanding.
Refresher Programme – Total of 18 tutorials for maths and English for each year group, with supporting three levels of work, summarising the curriculum. This will help recap on your child’s learning, find any gaps, and prepare your child for their next school year.
Bundles – Coming this summer, ‘bundles’ of lessons to practise a specific topic of the curriculum where your child has a gap in their knowledge or just needs to boost their practise to increase confidence (e.g. fractions).
Maryanne has years of experience as a Senco and Early Years’ specialist and has used this expertise to offer a ‘Starting School Programme’ (to prepare your child for starting school) and also offer Learning Needs Assessments to identify additional needs.
Sue has many years of experience as a teacher and private tutor, and also offers Academic Assessments to help parents understand their child’s needs and any gaps in their learning.
We are also both passionate about self-esteem in children and maintaining confidence, but understand the regular anxieties that children have.
To help support mental health, we have developed a ‘Wellbeing Zone’ with help, ideas and activities for children and parents.
What is your greatest business achievement so far?
We have been on a huge learning curve throughout building the website and business content, but for us, the greatest achievement comes from seeing parents and children using our programme and feeding back to us about how much it has helped them and their child. This makes everything worthwhile. We are both passionate about self-esteem and confidence in children so to hear children becoming more confident in their learning, is also priceless for us.
What do you want to achieve next?
Following customer and parent feedback, we are so excited to be extending what we offer to include our ‘Bundles’ packages.
These will be launched soon and will hopefully help children, who are struggling with specific areas of the curriculum, become more confident.
We have also put together our own maths learning packs to help support children’s learning at different ages. These will be launched shortly but you can email us for more information or to pre-book.
In our ideal world, we would like to be able to offer one website with everything a child may need, all in one place.
What one piece of advice would you like to offer someone thinking of entering into your field?
If we had one piece of advice for anyone thinking of starting a business, it would be just to go for it! It has been nearly two years of such long hours and hard work but so rewarding to finally get to the end of the content and see the programme being used and feedback from parents. Makes it all worthwhile.
What is your favourite aspect about working in the local area?
We love working locally, and knowing the schools and children locally is invaluable. Being internet based, it has also been nice to start to reach families further afield too to offer advice and help.
What encouraged you to join Hampstead Hive and what has your experience been like so far within the Hive?
Hampstead Hive has been an amazing advertising platform for us. It is so clear and easy to use thanks to Nikita and Jessica’s vision and work. They have so many great ideas about how to promote and bring businesses together.
