Hampstead Hive Member Spotlight - Margaret Nicholls
Tell us about your business, what services do you offer?
I’m a writer, editor and PR consultant. Having spent over 30 years as a magazine and newspaper journalist, I now support entrepreneurs, charities and corporates with their communications. From writing blogs, web copy and features, to helping businesses get coverage in the media, the written word is my art, my craft and my special power.
What is your greatest business achievement so far?
The project I’m most proud of is my recent collaboration with the International Diabetes Association. My task was to transform dense, clinical information into easily understandable language. Together we created simple, clear guides to show children and young adults with type 1 diabetes how to play sport safely.
What do you want to achieve next?
I want to teach small business owners how to raise their profile in the media so that they can boost their visibility and credibility. My years in publishing mean that I know exactly how to craft a compelling story and connect with journalists.
What one piece of advice would you like to offer someone thinking of entering into your field?
Writing well is difficult for everyone but, like any craft, it can be learned. To become a good writer you need to do two things: read good quality writing and practise your craft.
What is your favourite aspect about working in the local area?
In the area there are so many places I can go to sit and write, like the community libraries in Belsize Park, Primrose Hill and Keats House, plus numerous cafes. Even better, all are in easy walking distance from lovely green spaces. What encouraged you to join Hampstead Hive and what has your experience within the Hive been like so far?
What encouraged you to join Hampstead Hive and what has your experience within the Hivebeen like so far?
A friend told me it was a lovely, supportive group and I’m keen to get to know more people in the area. I’m quite a new member and I’m very much looking forward to going to the in-person gatherings and meeting other members.
